Lead Yourself

Before leading others

Your need

  • You wish to enhance your (or your people’s) ability to enhance their personal effectiveness by improving how they lead themselves and others in a personal and professional setting.

Background

We live in a world that faces unseen changes. Within organizations, we see managers struggling to come to terms with new demands on their managerial and leadership style. We have shifted from a position where control is managed by virtue of a formal badge of office (manager, parent, director etc.) to one where we have to lead people through the use of more intangible and flexible forms of leadership. People are no longer prepared to accept the 'do what I say' regime. They respond to a 'do what I do' leadership style.

If we are to lead others and ourselves more effectively, we have to get serious about the idea of personal leadership rather than plastic leadership. This is leadership where the whole you is aligned, centered and able to build relationships with anyone you live or work with. This workshop focuses on implementation and application of the Lead Yourself principles at the personal and interpersonal levels. The workshop will expand your personal leadership potential by working from the inside out, understanding how you map and manage the world and ultimately what action you can take to achieve the goal of shred and sustainable success. This workshop offers genuine results because the training starts from the premise that managing the alignment of how people think, feel and behave drives long term sustainable change.

The Lead Yourself course will help you and your organisation to significantly increase your effectiveness. This is because it works on the principle that the best way to develop an organisation is by helping the people within it to realise their leadership potential and not simply adopt someone else leadership map.

Benefits to you and your organisation

By the end of the programme the delegates will understand how to apply the following ideas:

  • Choose your choice although you might believe that you manage the choices in your life, the reality is that we often concede or give away much of this power to others. Effective personal leadership is dependent upon the extent to which we retrieve the ability to make and take choices. The key think is to understand the dimensions that drive how we make choices and how they influence our personal leadership style. In situations where we have to choose a choice we are often aced with a dilemma, to choose what we need to do, what we want to do, or what we should do. Only by understanding these drivers and how they influence our personal style can we start to optimize  our effectiveness.

  • Know where you’re going – there is little point in harnessing the power to make choices unless we know why we are taking them. At this stage the goal is to define a set of clear personal goals and outcomes and to use these as criteria by which future choices are taken. If an individual or organisation doesn't know where it is going then any decisions it takes today are likely to be sub-optimal and will often need to be taken again and again. This leads to people and organizations take choices that are driven by other people's goals and are as such sub-optimal.

  • Map your map don’t just rely on the current map of the world. Constantly seek to discover and understand how corruption in your map leads to fantasy maps and this in turn leads to poor choices.

  • Change how you change - At the end of the day, any leadership action will generally result in some form of change. As a consequence it is imperative to understand what change leadership style is adopted and how effective this is.  If you do what you always did – you will get what you always got.  For any  transition to be effective and sustainable you might need to learn how to effect change using alternative styles.

  • Step inside out - to effectively deliver personal success that is sustainable – you need to understand what success is for other people. To do this it is important to step outside of your view of the world and into theirs. Only once you understand how others think, feel and behave can you truly understand what success looks like for them.

  • Share success - Personal Leadership that is selfish and short-lived is not true success. The only real form of personal leadership is one that is founded in the notion of shared outcomes and sustainable success.

Critically, at no point in the programme will you be told what action you need to take to become more effective. The assumption is that there is no right way to manage life or work, and more importantly, only you really determine what improvement actions you have the desire and capability to undertake. The self-development framework simply offers a powerful vehicle by you can start and manage the improvement journey in a structured and supported way.

Who should participate

  • People who wish to refresh and rethink about their ability to lead other people in a managerial capacity.

  • People who are about to be presented with a new challenge in life (Career change, redundancy, promotion etc) and wish to enhance their capability to master the changes.

  • People who wish to enhance their personal effectiveness.

  • Companies who wish to introduce a common leadership language across the organisation. Not to enforce a particular operating style, but rather to create a platform to allow a broader debate about leadership within the organisation.
