Build Better Relationships

How to optimise your social capital

Your need

  • You (or your people) wish to enhance their ability to improve their working or personal relationships with others.

  • You want to enhance team performance by exploring some of the underlying forces that inhibit peak performance,

Background

Personal and business performance will always be dependent on your ability to build great relationships. No one in a business role operates in isolation. This can be seen by the old English word of ‘Connexity’, which derives from the Latin con-nectere, to tie or join together. It offers a reminder that the world needs to be measured less by the size of things but more by the connectors that tie the things together. For example, consider the four equations below:

  • 2 + 2 =

  • 2 – 2 =

  • 2 x 2 =

  • 2 / 2 =

The things stay the same but it is the connectors that make the difference. Traditionally people have focused on managing ‘things’, but we also need to understand how to manage the connectors and in doing this learn how to build better relationships.

There are many factors that help grow relationships. The more you understand the impact they have, the better you will be able to build effective relationships. The four key factors covered in this event are:

  • Share Success - how both players in an effective relationship need to combine the ability to inquiry what is important for the other person whilst having the strength to advocate what is important for them.

  • Social Style - how your natural social style will impact your ability to build rapport in a relationship.

  • Trust Fund – how to make tangible the intangible factor of trust in a relationship.

  • Shadow Dancing - how hidden secrets can lead to the downfall of even the most successful relationship.
